Notes about my journey of making this film.

Not without its challenges, we rallied to film Episode 2: Meet Millie! The original filming location fell through, but as any producer knows, pivots are mandatory. I applaud the cast and crew for doing so, beautifully. In this episode, we meet Debbie's bestie. Millie is really anxious about all things because she does too much. Her full name happens to be Mildred (just like Debbie’s Great Aunt). She always wants to be the person who fixes things, and people, when she thinks improvement is beneficial - whether they want it or not. She is a professor at a local community college and is dealing with some ageism at the school. She feels lonely in her life and learns that all she needs to do is be her true self and she will be loved for exactly who she is. Putting a film together is no easy task, especially for someone who has no clue how to do so! Well, since I am a HUGE fan of baby steps, I decided to start with a limited run web series. This month we made it happen! Episode 1: Meet Debbie was filmed and I am so grateful for all who helped make it happen. Thanks to this AMAZING group of humans for supporting my passion project and helping me bring it to life. ❤️  Dear Diary, There is a lot to do when it comes to making a movie. Sheesh. I figuring this out as I can and I am not afraid to ask for a lot of help. A really HUGE shout out to Kristen Falso-Capaldi who has been mentoring me on this adventure. She is an award-winning writer, playwright, and filmmaker. I am thrilled that she shares her wisdom and insights with me. I recently joined UpRiseHer, a She-centric co-working space in Providence and spending a few hours a week there working on this project.  It took me about two months, but I finished my film treatment! This is a summary of the film I am creating and includes an overview of what the story is about, character development, an outline of acts, etc. I had to create a couple of drafts and change a bit of the scope of the story, but I am feeling really good about it.
I am going to be serving as the executive producer and will play a very small role in the film. I started working on my budget and timeline, too. Next up: the screenplay! It has been great fun putting together some inspiration as far as a location and a soundtrack. You can take a listen to it here on a playlist I put together on Youtube. There is a fantastic group that supports women in the filmmaking world - Women In Film - so I have just joined the New England chapter. Well, I will end this little entry here. I gotta get to work! I've decided to write to you about my audacious effort of producing my very first film, The Dames of Rhode Island. As with all stories, let's start at the beginning. Not so long ago, I co-hosted an outing to Newport, Rhode Island through my Dame Who Do RI women's social group. Five of us gals met at The Huddle, which was owned by a friend at the time. We meandered our way to a local eatery and it was to be one of the most amazing nights. Here were five women who yakked the night away talking about an assortment of topics and who just didn't want the night to end because of the kismet connection we all felt. Of course, we all had to return to our own homes but now without first committing to a regular visit together each month. And, we did. We would meet up at each other's houses to eat, drink, and converse. We had a new friends group and all of us were delighted. But all good things must come to an end and after about a year's time, the girl band broke up. I was so moved by the cosmic good fortune to make new adult women friends. It is kind of a challenge, you know. We get set in our ways, have our routines, and loneliness creeps in. But when a moment like the one we gals had comes along, you feel inspired to believe that anything is possible. It was that experience that inspired The Dames of Rhode Island. I want to create a cinematic telling of the challenges and joys of making friends when you are an older woman. Periodically, I will be writing to you, Dear Diary to share my frustrations and my celebrations as I bring this idea to the screen. |
